1. Who we are
SELF English (“SELF English”, “we”, “us”) is an English-learning app for iOS and Android and the website at selfenglish.id. The app and website are operated by PT Sarana Edukasi Lingua Franca, Kediri, East Java, Indonesia. We are the data controller responsible for your personal data.
This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and the choices and rights you have. It applies to the SELF English mobile app and this website (together, the “Service”). It is written to comply with Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 27 of 2022, “PDP Law”) and the privacy requirements of the Apple App Store and Google Play.
2. Data we collect
Data you give us
- Account data — you sign in with your Google account. From Google we receive only your name, Gmail address, and profile picture. We never receive your Google password.
- Learning profile — your chosen daily learning goal, starting level, and preferences.
- Voice recordings — when you use speaking exercises (“Listen and repeat”, “Speak”), the app records your voice through the microphone so it can score your pronunciation. Recording only happens while you press and hold the speak button.
- Answers and text input — the answers you choose or type in exercises.
- Support messages — anything you send us by email or in-app feedback.
Data collected automatically
- Learning activity — lessons completed, scores (e.g. Sound Match, Smooth Talk, Natural Flow), streaks, time spent learning, and skill breakdown.
- Device and technical data — device model, operating system, app version, language, time zone, and an app-specific identifier.
- Diagnostics — crash reports and performance logs that help us fix bugs.
- Usage analytics — which screens and features are used, in aggregated or pseudonymous form.
Purchase data
Premium subscriptions are paid through the Apple App Store or Google Play. We never receive or store your card or payment details. We only receive confirmation of your subscription status (e.g. plan, start date, renewal or expiry) from Apple or Google.
Website
This website does not use advertising or tracking cookies and does not require you to create an account. Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) processes standard server logs such as IP address and browser type for security and reliability.

We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use your voice recordings for advertising.
4. Voice recordings
Because speaking practice is central to SELF English, we want to be specific about voice data:
- The app only accesses your microphone after you grant permission, and only records while you hold the speak button.
- Recordings are sent securely to our speech-recognition service provider to calculate your pronunciation score.
- We do not store your recordings. Each recording is deleted immediately after it has been analysed. Only the resulting scores are kept, as part of your learning history.
- We do not use your recordings to identify you by voice (no voice biometrics).
- You can turn off microphone access in your device settings at any time; speaking exercises will then be unavailable.
5. Who we share data with
We share personal data only with service providers that help us run the Service, under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only on our instructions:
- Sign-in — Google, to let you sign in with your Google account
- Cloud hosting and database providers — to store your account and learning progress
- Speech-recognition providers — to process voice recordings and calculate pronunciation scores
- Analytics and crash-reporting providers — to understand app usage and fix errors
- App stores — Apple and Google, for downloads, payments and subscription status
- Communication providers — to send service emails and notifications
- Website hosting — to serve and protect this website
You can ask us for the current list of providers at any time by emailing support@selfenglish.id.
We may also disclose data if required by law or a valid order from an Indonesian authority, to protect the rights and safety of our users or the public, or as part of a merger or acquisition (in which case we will notify you).
6. International transfers
Some of our service providers store or process data on servers outside Indonesia. When we transfer personal data abroad, we do so in line with the PDP Law, by making sure the recipient country or the provider offers an adequate level of protection, or through binding contractual safeguards.
7. How long we keep data
- Account and learning data — for as long as your account is active.
- After you delete your account — we delete or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except where we must keep certain records longer to comply with law (for example, tax or transaction records), or to resolve disputes.
- Voice recordings — not stored; deleted immediately after pronunciation scoring.
- Diagnostics and logs — generally up to 90 days.
- Support emails — up to 2 years after the conversation ends.
8. Your rights
Under the PDP Law you have the right to:
- get information about how your data is processed and access a copy of it;
- correct inaccurate or incomplete data;
- delete your data and close your account;
- withdraw consent you have given (for example, to marketing emails or microphone access);
- object to or restrict certain processing, including automated decisions with significant effects;
- receive your data in a commonly used format (data portability);
- file a complaint with the competent data protection authority in Indonesia.
To exercise any of these rights, email support@selfenglish.id from the email address linked to your account. We will respond within the time required by law (generally within 3 × 24 hours to acknowledge, and as soon as reasonably possible to fulfil). To delete your account, see Delete Your Account.
9. Security
We protect your data with industry-standard measures, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), access controls, and limiting access to staff and providers who need it. No system is perfectly secure; if a data breach affects your personal data, we will notify you and the relevant authority as required by the PDP Law.
10. Children
SELF English is designed for general audiences who want to learn English. If you are under 18, you should use the Service with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian, as required by Indonesian law. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. If you believe a child has given us data without such consent, contact us and we will delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when it was last changed. If the changes are significant, we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect.
